What My Son’s Hockey Injury Taught Me About Business Success

Matthew Birch with his son Brendan on the ice after the Spartans' 2023 PHL Championship win—highlighting how finding the right fit matters in hockey, surgery, and bookkeeping.

When you need a professional—whether it’s a doctor, a lawyer, a financial expert or someone to manage your bookkeeping—how do you choose the right one? Do you go with the first name you hear? The cheapest option? Or do you look for someone with the expertise and experience tailored to your needs?

At Legacy Profit Solutions, we believe that finding the right fit is the key to long-term success—not just in business, but in life. Recently, my family had an experience that reinforced this lesson in the most unexpected way.

A Life-Altering Moment on the Ice

My son Brendan is 16 years old and has dedicated much of his life to hockey. He dreams of playing at the NCAA or professional level, and last summer, he was invited to a camp in Michigan where he connected with Ron Fogarty, the former head coach of Princeton University’s men’s hockey team.

Ron saw Brendan’s potential and offered to mentor him, helping him develop his game for the next level. But that wasn’t all—Ron also invited Brendan to a high-profile, invite-only showcase at Michigan State University this July, where 50 top young players would compete in front of NCAA and pro scouts. It was the kind of opportunity that could change the trajectory of Brendan’s hockey career.

Then, on the first shift of the first game of the season, everything changed.

Brendan suffered a severe knee injury, nearly completely tearing his ACL. Suddenly, all the momentum he had built came to a halt. The doctors told us that without surgery, he would never play competitive hockey again.

Finding the Right Fit in a Critical Moment

Like any parent, I immediately started looking for solutions. The typical wait times in Canada for ACL surgery? Nine months. Add another 9-12 months of recovery, and Brendan wouldn’t just miss the MSU showcase—he’d lose two full years of development at a critical stage of his hockey career.

We searched for alternatives and came across Timely Medical, an organization that helps patients find top-tier surgeons with available capacity. But here’s the key—not all surgeons are the same.

Brendan didn’t just need any knee surgeon. He needed one with experience treating elite athletes, someone who understood the demands of high-performance hockey. Timely Medical connected us with Dr. Sheldon Martin, a highly specialized sports surgeon who had been the head surgeon for the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes (now Salt Lake City) and is currently the head surgeon for the Arizona Cardinals and Diamondbacks.

This wasn’t just luck—it was about having the right connections and finding the right fit for Brendan’s specific needs.

What This Has to Do with Business

So, what does this story have to do with Legacy Profit Solutions?

Everything.

Just like not all surgeons are created equal, not all bookkeepers, accountants, or CFOs are the right fit for every business.

Business owners often make the same mistakes when hiring financial professionals:
They rely on a friend’s recommendation—but fail to confirm if the bookkeeper has demonstrated expertise in their industry, and don’t recognize the opportunity cost of poor bookkeeping.
They hire the cheapest option—and later realize that poor bookkeeping costs far more in mistakes and lost opportunities.
They try to do it themselves—only to waste valuable time and struggle to keep up.

At Legacy Profit Solutions, we help businesses skip the trial-and-error process by matching them with the right financial professionals from the start. Whether you need bookkeeping, tax guidance, or strategic accounting advice, we connect you with someone who understands your industry, your challenges, and your goals—so you’re not just getting someone who can do the job, but someone who can help your business thrive.

The Right Fit Makes All the Difference

Brendan’s recovery is now in the hands of one of the best sports surgeons in North America, and thanks to the right connections, he has a fighting chance to return to the ice at a high level.

Your business deserves the same level of care. Financial decisions impact every part of your business, and a professional who truly understands your needs can make the difference between profitability and struggle, between growth and stagnation.

If you’re a business owner wondering whether you have the right financial team behind you, or if you’re tired of feeling like your bookkeeping isn’t quite working, let’s talk. At Legacy Profit Solutions, we don’t just find you any bookkeeper—we find you the right one.

Because the right fit isn’t just important—it’s everything.
